Llewellyn Education

Rhidian Llewellyn was born in 1957 and educated at Pangbourne College where he was Head Boy, and the University of London where he read History.  He has a Diploma in Education from Oxford University.

He started his teaching career at Heatherdown Preparatory School in 1976 where he taught Prince Edward and David Cameron.  He was Head of English and History at Arnold House, London, and Head of History of Sherborne Preparatory School in the 1980's.

In 1986 he joined the staff of The Dragon School, Oxford and, within two years, became Housemaster of School House responsible for 80 11-13 years olds.  During his five years on the staff, he taught scholarship English and edited The Draconian, in those days a termly magazine.

In 1991 he was appointed Headmaster of Papplewick, a post he held for twelve years during which time the school flourished academically and culturally while maintaining its reputation for sporting success.  At a time when prep-school boarding declined, Papplewick remained consistently full.  The school’s 2002 ISI Inspection report concluded:

“The Headmaster has a very good understanding of the needs of the school and its pupils.  He has a very clear vision for the school based upon attaining high standards in pupils’ work, behaviour and personal development.  He is most keen that pupils should make good progress and achieve the highest possible standards of which they are capable.  In addition, his vision for the development of the site is based upon a good understanding of the priority needs of both pupils and staff.  The rebuilding of the changing rooms as well as the ongoing programme of building development since 1998 (Sports Hall and Music School) are very good examples of this foresight and understanding.  In addition, the headmaster’s leadership style motivates both staff and pupils alike.  Indeed, the quality of leadership shown by the headmaster is the major contributory factor to the progress of the school has made during his time in office.”

Rhidian left Papplewick in 2003 to establish an educational consultancy for Parents, Schools and Governors.  He is a non-executive director of Creative Education Corporation and adviser to Affinity, the leading provider of financial advice to Independent Schools.  He is a governor of three Independent schools and Chairman of one.  He has been an ISI Inspector of Schools since 1995, served on the Boarding Schools Advisory Group from 1998 – 2002, and was appointed Lay Chaplain by The Bishop of Reading in 2002.

Rhidian is a freelance journalist and book reviewer and has had articles published in The Sunday Times, Daily Telegraph, Sunday Telegraph, Mail on Sunday and Sporting Life on Education, Politics, History, Cricket, Racing and Hunting.  He has been a member of the MCC since 1975 and is a crossword addict who has won The Spectator Crossword Competition on three occasions.  He helped compile The Book of Racing Quotations for Stanley Paul in 1987.

Rose Llewellyn was for many years a Corporate Events Organiser for a large oil company in the City.  On leaving the City she ran her own small businesses for several years, one a private catering company and the other a game shooting agency.  On marrying Rhidian she became Headmaster’s Wife and ran the domestic side of the school.  She has two boys who both went through Papplewick and then went on the Eton and Harrow so has many years of experience of both preparatory and senior schools from both sides of the fence.
